    What Does "Self-actualization" Mean?

Maslow developed the concept of self-actualization to emphasize that people are "what they can be and what they must be".
    Dec 29, 2025

Self-actualization is the core concept of American psychologist Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs Theory". The so-called "self-actualization" means that individuals can give full play to their potentials and talents, and make meaningful and valuable contributions to the society, so as to realize their ideals and ambitions.

Maslow put forward the concept of self-actualization is to emphasize that people "can become what kind of person, must become what kind of person". Therefore, scientists must be scientifically accomplished, literary scholars must write good works, and entrepreneurs must develop their businesses.

Therefore, self-actualization is a desire to achieve what can be achieved. But not all people can reach this level; self-actualization is a desire to contribute to humanity.

Maslow also wrote in his book "A Further Inquiry into the Nature of Man" that "every self-actualized person devotes himself to a cause, to a call, to a mission, and to a work he loves, and also produces forgetfulness. Other basic human needs are satisfied from the outside world. The former is to "demand" from society, while the latter is to "give" to society.

In fact, Maslow himself is a model of self-actualization.
